Exterior work was the primary focus and included the replacement of all flat roofs with a polyurethane foam roof system. Sloped roofs were replaced with architectural shingles to maintain the historical character to the building. Brick and stone masonry walls were tuck-pointed and sealed. The original coal bins were eliminated or converted to usable spaces and the perimeter walls were water-proofed. The door replacement included the replacement of all of the exterior doors at each building with new insulated aluminum/FRP units. At the High School, an access control system was installed that allowed school personal to lock each entrance from a main computer terminal.

Interior renovations were performed at each facility to improve the learning and teaching environment, upgrade the technology and to provide handicap accessibility. The gyms in the elementary schools were renovated to provide open, bright and safe spaces. At the high school, the original natatorium was demolished and the Arts Building was constructed to house the band, orchestra and choir rooms. Assistance was provided to obtain funding for all work through bond issues, energy loans and federal grants.
